When You Present A Radio Show, Do You...
Use a structured guide?
Have you got exciting and engaging show content?
Did you structure your broadcast hour into segments?
Do you use a professional running order?
Have you carefully selected and planned your musical / spoken journey?
Are you 100% at ease using the mixing desk? Can you operate it without making mistakes?
Can you present without sounding monotone?
When you read articles on air, does it sound natural?
Do your interview questions bring out the best from your guests?
Have you thought about the best ways to start and end your shows?
Attract, Don't Push Away
If you're not structuring your show properly, you could be pushing listeners away from your show.
If you have the desire to make great radio shows, then this might be the most important thing you've ever read.
I Had No Idea How to Present a Radio Show....
When I started radio presenting in 1996, I didn't know what I was doing. My shows were awful.
Know This....
Rubbish In = Rubbish Out
Poorly produced radio shows and podcasts WILL mean few listeners.
Once That Listener's Gone, Then They're Gone for Good
You've only got one chance to hook a listener. If they tune into a chaotic, unfocused show, which technically sounds awful, the chances of them tuning in again are slim.
So, What’s the Answer?
Well, it's all about having a decent system in place AND working hard. If you follow a well-planned system, put effort into your show, you're guaranteed to improve.
I Finally Took Matters into My Own Hands...
After struggling for a few years, I decided to study radio presenting. I went to Lambeth College, and I enrolled in a radio production course. At the same time, I listened to my favourite radio DJs, and I analysed their radio shows. I then joined numerous community radio stations, and I practised a LOT. I recorded my shows, and I listened back. I wanted to know what worked, what didn't work and what could be made better.

You See Hard Work Pays Off....
After a few years of practice, I ended up presenting on two FM radio stations (this was when FM was a big thing). For two years, I presented a radio show to 100,000 listeners. On another occasion, I presented a weekend show to 20,000 listeners. Hard work, study and practice got me there.
Then I Joined The BBC World Service, Radio
In 2002, I joined the BBC World Service, Radio as a studio manager. I technically operated radio transmissions to audiences of 20 million. For the next nine years, I worked at the BBC, and continued to present radio shows on local radio. I also trained over one hundred volunteers in radio presenting and media interviewing techniques. I did this for free across five different community radio stations.
Eighteen Years of Radio Experience Created This Training Course
On a hot, sweaty, August day in a Tokyo hotel room in 2014, I decided to create an online training system. I wanted to take my eighteen years of radio training experience and turn it into a course that anyone could access. My goal is to help community radio presenters and podcasters produce professional sounding shows. I'm very passionate about helping people present.
Stations I've Worked And Trained At:
BBC World Service (2002 - 2011)
K2K Radio
Whitechapel AM
FLR 107.3FM
Resonance FM
Radio DÅB FM
TGR Sound
Total Rock
City FM
Croydon Radio
Sydenham FM
Radio Kings: 999AM

Information for Podcasters
While I often refer to the 'radio presenter/radio station' in this course, a lot of the information here is also relevant to podcasters. Podcasters also need to know how to target their shows, source content, understand about libel and copyright, be able to interview guests etc.
Just to note, this course doesn't show you how to set up a home studio or what broadcasting equipment you should buy etc. It focuses primarily on the planning, preparing, targeting and presentational side of broadcasting. Podcasters; however, can widen their audience reach by submitting their shows to community radio stations as well. That's discussed later on in the course.
Feel free to drop me an email and tell me your podcast idea, and we'll take it from there. [email protected]

"Just finished watching the course. It has spiked my motivation to put together a properly planned
music podcast/mixcloud show rather than having a list of music, a mixer and winging it.
Thanks for the great pointers."
