Course Update
I interviewed Nick Cavell from BBC African sports. It was a very informative interview. Nick spoke to me about his career path into the BBC. He describes how he finds stories, how he covers stories, and how he verifies facts. Other tips include how to interview a football manager. There’s also advice on what it takes to be a BBC sports journalist. You can find this interview in the advice from the professional's section.

AHHHH I'M GOING TO DIE!!!

My throat went dry, my top lip stuck to my mouth and my microphone shook in my hand as I gulped.

"So...er.....um.... when did you get involved with the charity?" I asked as my botty went "wooo!"

He looked at me angrily and said.....

"WHAT! YOU WANT ME TO ANSWER THAT AGAIN?"

Picture
Oh No! I've just asked my interviewee subject the same question twice in the interview.

I once interviewed someone for thirty minutes with the pause button on for goodness sake. O_o

AHHHHH MY INTERVIEW SUCKED!
Picture

In my mind, I was going to be a great interviewer. Breezing into a room asking superb questions, while my interviewee sobbed away under my tough questioning. The truth was, I had no idea what I was doing. I once left the batteries to my recorder at home. No problem I thought..."So Mandy, tell me more about what you do?" as I stretched like a snake on viagra from the power socket.

Even worse, my interviews were just downright boring.  All that time and hassle just to make a really dull interview.

AWESOME WEBSITE CONTENT!

If you want your blog or your website to stand out, then go and get some high-quality interviews. However, and this is important, don’t upload boring interviews. Interviews that have lame, amateurish questions like: "So Mandy, tell me more about what you do?" drive people away. If you create these types of interview, you'll be wasting your time.

ALWAYS make your interviews compelling and interesting.

Yeah, but how Mr ex-FM presenter to a Danish radio station, Mr ex-hospital radio manager for five years, Mr ex-FM presenter to a South London radio station, Mr ex-BBC World Service man for nine years, Mr ex-community radio nutter with a microphone and sheep sounds?

Blimey, you've had a lot of experience Mr radio bean.

I sure have my little passionate interviewee student of doom. In fact, I've got eighteen years of radio experience.

I say! Please go on!

It's easy really. You do it like this....

You learn how to research. You learn to choose the right interviewee subject for the interview. You learn to know what questions to ask in advance rather than making them up on the bus journey... that I er...of course have never done..umm.

And you go away and prepare those “counter questions.” The ones you can fire back at your interviewee when you get the answer you expected.

And when this happens, you’re going to have compelling interviews. Media interviews that people will want to hear. Interviews that are better than: "So Mandy, tell me more about what you do?"

And get this.....

Better interviews mean more people are going to want to visit your site / listen to your podcast etc.

So How Can Being A Good Interviewer Help Me?
Discovering how to conduct interviews for any medium be it TV, radio or online is a handy skill to have. Once you discover the tricks to professional interviewing, you'll be able to handle any form of media interview. This can lead to employment in many different fields such as online journalism, radio, communications, copywriting and even public relations.

High-quality interviews can also be an excellent way to drive traffic to your blog, website and YouTube channel, etc. Poor quality interviews, however, can push people away from your sites because bad interviews will make you look amateurish. Don't be one of those people doing bad interviews, create high-quality interviews.

Don't be like Mandy.

Why Learning These Skills Once Will Give You A Lifetime Benefit

First of all, if you don't have an interview plan, then you're going to prepare your questions poorly. Or, in my case, on the bus.

Sloppy questions then create bad interviews (did you ever hear my Mandy interview?)

What you need is a template. A template that teaches you how to find, research, prepare and structure your interview idea. You'll also need to know what types of interview questions to ask and when to ask the right questions.

For example, is now a good time to use an imaginary question or should you use a devil's advocate question?

Discover The Secrets To Successful Media Interviews can teach you media interviewing skills in a fun and engaging way.

And remember, once you learn these skills you'll be able to use them for life.

For over 18 years, I've been involved in all aspects of radio. I worked for nine years at The BBC World Service, Radio (2002 - 2011). There I worked on radio packages and documentaries. I've also hosted a music show on two FM stations and numerous community stations. Before the BBC, I spent eight years managing a hospital radio station in South London (Radio Kings 1997 - 2005). I've been a radio trainer / technical operator for numerous community stations such as Resonance FM, K2K Radio and Whitechapel AM.
